Team Boyd,

We have a group of people planning on doing the Tough Mudder February 11th....our team, of course, is Team Boyd. We are having t-shirts made for the event, and I have had several people tell me they would like to be able to buy one of the t-shirts. We thought we would throw this out there and let you order a shirt if you would like! They are going to be on black performance material, in either a man cut or a ladies cut. They are going to cost $25 each, which is $5 more than the actual cost, so we are donating the rest to Lisa, Izzy, and Cap. If you want to donate more, feel free to! The t-shirts have to be ordered by next Thursday at the latest, so you will need to let me know if you want one by the night of Wednesday, January 18th. The t-shirts come in x-small through x-large, men's or women's cut. You can email me at melkeyes@bellsouth.net or text me at 336-414-2342 with any questions or your order. If you can put "team Boyd t-shirt" in the subject line, it would help me keep things organized.

One more thing.....we would love Team Boyd spectators at the event on February 11th! http://toughmudder.com/events/georgia-2012/ . So come on out if you have free time and want to help us REPRESENT!!!!! We all know who the toughest mudder there will be....OUR SUPERMAN!!

Thanks so much,
Melissa Williamson

SuperFamily Book submission - too cute not to share on blog!

Allison and I first met the Boyd family 2 years ago, when we moved into the house next door to theirs. This will not surprise anyone, but David, Lisa, and Izzy immediately greeted us with huge smiles and welcomed us to the neighborhood. Since we were newlyweds, they also gave us a very nice card congratulating us on the wedding, along with a celebratory bottle of wine. Needless to say, they have always been easy to get along with, and the absolute best neighbors we could ever ask for.

One of my first (and funniest) memories of David happened to be when he was out working in his yard, albeit sans shirt. He of course still looked like he could suit up and play for a college football team that very day. As I walked by the window carrying a bowl of ice cream, I caught a glimpse of him and thought “I hope Allison doesn’t see him and make fun of me for eating this bowl of ice cream.” I proceeded to sit on the sofa, and just a few minutes later I heard Allison’s voice, as she looked out the window: “Ummm, sweetie….I think you might need to start working out a little harder!” Haha – thanks a lot, David!

I will always have two lasting memories of David’s legacy, and I’m certain they are both obvious to anyone who knew him. The first is his ever-present display of eternal optimism and endless energy. I knew him for one year pre-diagnosis, and one year after. In either year, I never saw him without a smile. If anything, he was more optimistic and more energized after beginning his fight. Even during the midst of his battles the last several months, here were just a few examples of his energy and character:

1. Realizing he had some extra pine straw, he proceeded to dress our lawn with his excess while we were out of town. All because he was feeling “neighborly,” to use his word.

2. He helped arrange a fence installation on our property while he was at MD Anderson in Houston. I was angry because I thought he was home when I sent him a text for his expert advice, but what could I do besides shake my head in amazement?

3. He sent me a video of The Karate Kid using his patented “crane kick” on the bad guy, which became our metaphor for his fight with cancer. While I’m sure most mortals would get discouraged, David never wavered. What a warrior.

My second lasting memory of David’s legacy is that of “David The Family Man.” As all the images of David flash through my head, nearly all of them are of David and his family. David, Lisa, and Izzy at the Christmas Parade. David teaching Izzy how to ride her bike in the driveway. Superman-clad David, Lisa, Izzy, and soon-to-be-born Cap knocking on our door to trick-or-treat on Halloween. The entire family so-colorfully decked out on Easter Sunday. The list goes on and on. Even though it was for a very short period of time, I am a better man for having known and lived next door to David. I am forever grateful, and I can only imagine the positive impact he had on those closer to him.

David undoubtedly felt the love and inspiration he received from his hundreds of supporters this past year. A few months ago, as we talked in his driveway, he told me that it all the prayers and well-wishes meant the world to him. He was overwhelmed and humbled. What I wish I had said, and what I pray he knew, is that his inspiration was infinitely more powerful than that of all his followers, combined. Talk about a Super Man.

With all our “Neighborly” Love,

Allison & Jason Hodge

If you have ever doubted the impact one person can have, I encourage you to read through the comments on weloveteamboyd or David's facebook. Today, in the midst of our grief, we have been comforted by your prayers and memories. Thank you.

A memorial service in celebration of David's life and loving spirit, will be held on Monday, January 9th at 3pm at Oconee Presbyterian Church. Children are welcome at the celebration, however, childcare will also be provided. Following the service, there will be a visitation with the family and until then, we ask that you respect their request for no visitors.

In lieu of flowers, you are encouraged to continue to donate blood and platelets through the Atlanta Blood Services in memory of David Boyd. Additional ways to show your support will posted on the teamboyd blog as arrangements are made.

Continue to send your thoughts...

I'd like to compile them all (with some help of course) and make a book for Izzy and Cap as a reminder of the love and happiness their dad created in such a short time and to capture their moms strength and grace! Please keep sending in cute stories about David and his family and how he changed your life! You can post to blog or email to mail@athensparent.com (subject: SuperFamily Book) - please send pictures as well! I want to start now while our feelings are raw, open and honest! Love really shines when we are in pain - crazy how that happens!

I loved Jennifer's note and look forward to more of these...."My persistent memory of David is this: It is any given morning last year. He is leaving Barrow school in the morning after dropping off Izzy. He is handsome (first with hair and later without hair). He looks like a model, has a contagious smile and has a "hello" for everyone he passes.....and then he slings a pink scooter over his shoulder as he heads back home!"

Our Superman Forever and Always!!!

David has gone Home.

Early this morning, in Lisa's arms, David peacefully passed away.

As I'm sure we are all feeling, I'd like to run over and wrap this family in my arms, but at this point they have requested no visitors. Please respect their need for space and time to grieve. Messages of love and support can be posted to the weloveteamboyd blog.

I will send more information out about funeral arrangements and memorials services as they become available.

But, for now, I ask that you offer up a prayer of thanksgiving for the amazing, inspirational life of David Boyd and continued prayers for strength and peace for his family.

God bless,
Kim

In His Hands...

On behalf of Lisa and the Boyd family, THANK YOU all for your notes of love and support these last few days.

I wanted to give you an update on David and answer some of the questions that we've received.

David was able to come home to Athens on New Year's Eve. He is not in pain and has compassionate and wonderful hospice care. Only God knows how much more time David has with us, and we ask for your continued prayers for strength, patience, and peace.

At this point, the Boyds are not accepting visitors. They are simply cherishing every moment they have together. David is able to watch as Cap toddles from room to room with his ever present smile. Izzy makes regular visits to snuggle up and tell him stories, or simply to watch a movie together. Lisa and David have been able to find moments of quiet time together. And thankfully, David's family have all been able to come down to sit with him or talk with him on the phone.

We can't thank you enough for the love you have shown. Lisa has truly been inundated with emails, texts and calls...to the point that it's become a bit overwhelming. She is not able to respond to everyone, and while she shouldn't, she still feels the burden of not thanking each of you individually. For the time being, I'd like to ask that if you want to send a message of support, that you post it on the weloveteamboyd.blogspot.com website rather than email or text Lisa. The entire family, David included, check that site regularly for comfort and strength.

If you have specific questions, please feel free to email me (kimjness@yahoo.com) and I'll try to get an answer for you.

My heart is heavy, but as David has shown me this last year, my spirit remains strong...

peace to you all,
Kim Ness
